A map is also
a way of looking.

The atlas brings together records of protected architecture, building types, historical periods and forms. It supports comparisons across sites while keeping the physical building at the centre of the inquiry.

The project connects source research, visual studies and field planning. It is an ongoing research tool; this page presents a selected study from its development.

Record

Start with a traceable record.

Protection records establish an entry point. A legal category, a building’s history and a decision to visit are kept as different kinds of knowledge.

Form

Read what is visible.

Photographs draw attention to roofs, spans, supports and silhouettes. This view of Anji Bridge brings its stone arch, open spandrels and reflection into one frame.

Visit

Return the atlas to the world.

Field planning brings records back to actual places: what can be approached, which part of a site survives, and what still needs to be observed. A planned visit is not treated as a completed one.
